Campus Resources

There is a wide variety of technology resources for individuals with disabilities throughout the UNC Charlotte campus. Computer labs and Atkins Library are equipped with assistive technology and adaptive equipment, and employees in the computer labs and the Library are knowledgeable about support technology and can assist when needed.

“Assistive technology (often abbreviated as AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”

The Office of Disability Services collaborates with departments across campus to provide an inclusive environment, and has specific software standards that support inclusion. These standards are available in all computer labs in UNC Charlotte, and in the Library. Standard software includes the following:

• JAWS screen reader
• Zoomtext screen magnifier

Assistive Technology for employees with a documented disability is available through coordination with the employee’s supervisor. Employees who need Assistive Technology should contact their supervisor or the Department of Human Resources website, or by calling 704‑687‑2276. Employees with questions about Assistive Technology can contact the Office of Disability Services at 704‑687‑0040.

Visitors to campus can utilize the Assistive Technology that is available in Atkins Library. For more information, visit the Library Services section of the Atkins Library website or contact an Atkins Library staff member at 704‑687‑3872.

LiveSafe

• Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing that need to contact Campus Police can do so by using the LiveSafe app.

VIDEOPHONE

• UNC Charlotte has a videophone on campus to assist Deaf individuals with their communication needs. The videophone is located in the Student Union on the mezzanine level. For more information about the videophone, contact staff in Disability Services at 704‑687‑0040 (tty/v) or disability@charlotte.edu.

TTY

• UNC Charlotte has a TTY on campus for use by individuals who are Deaf or need to communicate with an individual who is Deaf. The TTY is located in the Cone Center Afterhours. For more information about the TTY, contact the Office of Disability Services at 704-687-0040 (tty/v) or disability@charlotte.edu

For assistance planning your visit to campus and to use the Videophone in the Student Union and the TTY in the Cone Center, use the interactive campus map tool.

The UNC Charlotte map is interactive. The map allows viewers to choose the layer that provides relevant information. The Accessibility layer shows the accessible campus pathways, automatic door paddles to building entrances and accessible parking. The menu at the top of the map web-page allows the map to be enlarged.

UNC Charlotte has car and van accessible parking located in parking decks and lots close to University facilities throughout the campus. All vehicles parked on campus are required to have a parking permit or pay for parking.

Individuals parking in accessible parking spaces must have a disability placard and follow the rules as outlined by Parking and Transportation Services.

Visitors to campus are encouraged to use the campus map to locate the building that they wish to visit. Visitor parking is available in the Cone, East or Union Decks. If accessible parking is needed, find the closest accessible parking in a visitor lot nearby to the building. It is helpful to check for campus areas that may be under construction.

UNC Charlotte has several transportation tracking services to facilitate your campus travel.

Passio Go!

Passio Go! is a website and app that provides real-time information about the campus shuttles and paratransit, including campus routes. Passio Go! can be downloaded to your phone and used during your time on campus.

Niner Transit

Niner Transit is a fully accessible shuttle system that provides transportation on campus using a fixed route.

Niner Paratransit

Niner Paratransit provides scheduled and on-demand disability transport for those with mobility impairments who are registered for the service. Faculty, staff and students who wish to use paratransit must provide documentation to Disability Services and be approved.

University personnel who anticipate visitors with the need for disability transportation are strongly urged to secure services in advance; call 704-687-5636.

Light Rail

Charlotte Area Transit Services (CATS) operates Charlotte’s LYNX light rail system, which includes the Blue Line Extension that has a stop on our campus and connects to Niner Transit. Members of the UNC Charlotte campus community are eligible to purchase a CATS all-access transit pass, which includes unlimited use of light rail.
